• Wave Spray or Sea Spray: Which Is Best for Me?

Dames,  there are 2 kinds of wave sprays in this world.  Ones that have salt, and well, ones that don’t. On the wave spray shelf there’s so many to chose from how do you chose which is best for you? Lets start with how you want to see your wave. If you have fine hair, I think we can agree you don’t want your hair looking greasy and shiny. If you want a fresh out of the ocean, air dried wave look thats a little crunchy in the perfect way you want a salt spray.  They call it sea spray with some brands. If you have thicker textured hair and want shiny wetter wave looks choose one without salt.  Usually called wave spray and may have oil as marketed ingredient.

“wave “spray is shiny and has sheen and oil in ingredients

“sea’ spray has salt and is good for piecey beach look.

Hope this helped you determine which to use for different looks. Let me know any questions you have! @thehairdame

  • Keep Your Curls Frizzz Free This Summer!

Dames, curly hair can either be the bane of your existence or the joy of your hair life. The girls that know how to work  them are the ones that enjoy them. A few tricks to know how to love that curly mane.

    1. The right products. So many to choose from. How do you know whats best? Curly hair needs 2 things 1)  frizz control and 2) moisture. Look for products (creams and oils) that state humidity resistant and moisturizing. The new it stuff right now is Redken’s NBD. Short for No Blow Dry. It’s the perfect combination of moisture and control. They have 3 options, depending on your hair type. Its the bomb too for wavy hair bringing out your natural wave without diffusing.

    2.  Scrunch as much water out of your hair as possible but don’t, may I repeat DO NOT use your hands. This creates frizz, you must use a towel. You can actually dry your hair by continuously scrunching it. I found this awesome product called towel gloves. It comes with a towel turban. You can start with the towel turban, let your hair dry in the towel, take it out, apply NBD, then use your towel gloves to scrunch the product into your hair until almost totally dry. Viola!

Hope these tips get your curly locks through the summer with less frizz and more style! Let me know if you have any questions. @thehairdame

  • Heat vs Hair: How Much Heat Should I Use with Each Tool?

HI Dames, I get this question a lot. How hot should my iron be?  The answer is it varies, but here’s a quick tip. Most irons can heat up to 450 degrees. This heat setting is not necessary for any person that is not a professional or has dense multi textural hair that needs serious heat to straighten. Fine to normal hair can straighten or curl around 320-380 degrees. If you have course hair or curly hair 415 will be a good setting. You do not need to hold you hair on the iron for 30 seconds. This is an old wives tale when irons only got up to 200 degrees. A solid 10 seconds is fine. If you want your curl to hold extra time you can set it after you put the heat on for the cool down, if you are beach waving your hair, do the whole head before you finger through. This is a loose set, so by the time you get to loosening the wave it has already cooled down.

Another tip, always use a protective spray or a setting spray before applying heat to your hair. Here’s a flashback of a previous post for a break down of the best protective sprays to use- click here.

Jamie has fine hair, even though she has a lot of it, 300 degrees was perfect for her hair.

I have more course, Italian hair- I use between 375-400 depending on how frizzy my hair air dried.

Laura has bleached fine hair. Absolutely no higher than 275-300 is necessary on this type of hair .

I hope this helps all YOU Dames out there!

  • How To Really Get That Picture Perfect Beach Hair

Hi Dames! Beach waves are the go- to for summer hair.  Duh.  However, I understand not all hair textures keep the same hold on the wave.  Does your beach wave fall limp or become non existent? Well, there’s 2 essentials to a beach wave:

    1. Properly wave your hair with an iron in the manner which your desired wave is flowing. Below is a video to show you how to achieve a glam wave vs. a more relaxed beachy wave

    2.  The proper products. Products are half the battle with hairstyles. There are so many beach and texture sprays out there how do you know which ones to use? Well, I have favorites. First, I don’t really favor the sprays that have salt in them.  They dry your hair out. I prefer the sprays that make your hair piecey and shiny, or a little waxy. Finally, if you have very fine hair and your beach waves fall easily, my ultimate fav is to use a texture spray with strong hold. Hairspray is a little to crunchy sometimes, a strong hold texture spray will give you the same effect with out the crunchy look. This will also keep you from needing to reapply product all day.

Let me know how it goes for you Dames!

  • Hair Masks: Must Haves For Summer!

Hi Dames! I get a lot of people asking me about hair masks, especially in the summer. The sun, pool, and ocean can dry out hair.  Having a good hair mask to use once a week is important. Masks have different benefits for different reasons- some are for moisture, some are protein, and some are both. If you are blonde, blondish, or have any blonde in your hair whatsoever, you most likely will need a little protein as well as moisture. If you have extensions, I would say the same. If you are brunette or red head (or any darker shade) a simple moisture mask will do the trick. The thing about cheaper products vs more expensive products is the quality of ingredients they use most of the time, sometimes you are just paying for the name.  However for example: Oribe, they have spent millions of dollars creating proprietary ingredients. Brands that are owned by Loreal, well chances are they have some rendition of Loreal ingredients. Look at the ingredient list in the back of the bottle. If there’s ingredients that you know are cheaper like coconut oil, castor oil, avocado oil, you shouldn’t be breaking the bank. Below are some of my favorites!

I’m obsessed with this brand Hask. Sulfate free, paraben free, milk from the God’s for your hair.

If you have damaged hair, Olaplex is a must . Once a week will change your hair life. You can add a dab to your moisture mask for extra protein if you just want to maintain the protein health of your hair.

Moroccan Oil was the first brand to bring us Argan Oil. Its a no brainer. I love this product

Well, Dames keep your sunnies on and your hair soft this summer!

  • Hair Bracelets: Why You Want Them, Where to Get Them

HI Dames, hair bracelets?  I love the way a rubber band looks on my wrist.. said no one ever. Recently, when I was in Tokyo I stumbled across the cutest charm store. You could make your own bracelets, necklaces, and turn rubber bands into bracelets with charms.  I bought one, come to find out at checkout, the brand is actually from Brooklyn, NY ! I was so excited to share this with every Dame I know so you don’t have to downgrade your wrist this summer in between hairstyles during the day.

There are other versions of this concept. Below are a couple I favor that are easily accessible.

Etsy Also has some really cool versions, that you put your rubber bands on the bracelet , so it doesn’t look like a rubber band .

These are called Duelette’s on Chillyjilly.com. They come in different colors so you can layer them in your hair. When they are on your wrist they look like bangles. So cute! Enjoy

  • Hair Jewelry: How to Rock It Wihtout Looking 12

Hi Dames! So, I am totally obsessed with the fact  hair jewelry and accessories are totally a thing right now. All the celebs are rocking them on red carpets, and summer draws us  in to want to accessorize basic styles to look , well, not basic.  This bares the question, how do i rock hair jewelry and accessories without looking 12. Well, there are a few  answers.

    1) Make sure your hair is actually styled first. a 12 year old will have straight hair dried hair with a clip pulling it back . A dame should have their hair in some form of wave or style  and or a sophisticated part that looks intentional.

    the hair dame

    2) Don’t rock the accessory  in the same way as a 12 year old. Be creative with placement of head bands, whether just along your hair line, or more like a head wrap, place them in a cute pixie to accentuate the style.

    3) Layer barrettes with color or style to make it look chunky. Place the barrettes in cute places to accentuate the style not just be functional. Below are some examples.

  • The Dame Answers: What Are Sulfates And Parabens, What Do They Do To Your Hair?

    Shampoo

Hi Dames, so I wanted to address a couple very important terms a lot of brands use. They throw around these terms sulfate free and paraben free but what does that mean? What the heck is a sulfate and why is it free?   Sulfates are cheap/harsh detergents placed in shampoos for several reasons. First- they create a sudsing effect, that makes people think its cleaning their hair. Technically it is.  However its the same ingredients that are in dish soap, detergent, surface cleaners!  Yes it is cleansing but very harsh. Do you want to wash your hair with the same ingredients your washing your dishes with? I think not. It can wear your hair down over time and leave it completely stripped of its natural oils.

Parabens are a preservative used in cosmetics to prevent molds and harmful growths to the formulas. It gives our products shelf life. Very little amounts of parabens are actually in the formulas but they became on high radar alert when traces of these parabens were found in breast cancer tumors. Mostly because of products used on the skin and deodorants. As far as hair is concerned companies have responded to the demand of products without these potentially harmful ingredients. Therefore there are several options for us Dames out there now.

When it comes to hair extensions and hair color being high demand for constant use we should always be mindful about what’s in them. Sulfates can strip your hair color and make your extensions fall out. Parabens can cause cancer. So.. sulfate and paraben free are the way to go across the board. Below are a couple of options I love!
